Thank you for visiting International Coalition for Alzheimer’s Research and Education (ICARE). ICARE is a non-profit organization that is aimed at increasing public awareness and services, in particularly to persons residing in undeserved communities, regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Alzheimer’s disease is a cognitive disorder that has been labeled the “silent epidemic” affecting more than 50 million people worldwide and approximately 5 million people living in the United States.1 If no cure is found, the disease is expected to increase by as much as 14 million people by the year 2060; disproportionately affecting the African-American and Latino populations 2-3 times higher compared to their white counterparts.2,3
According to reports from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in America with females being three times more likely to suffer from the disease than men.4 More alarming, the disease is reported killing more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.5 On average, the out-of-pocket cost of “informal” care for someone with dementia ranges from approximately $850 to $20,535 per year.6 However, the cost can increase drastically if the person is admitted into a long-term care facility.7 This type of data warrants immediate public awareness and community support. Yet, because of the rising health care costs and lack of resources, many persons residing in undeserved communities are not able to burden the medical expenses or afford quality services needed to care for their loved ones suffering from this disease.
Since the inception of ICARE in 2007, the organization has focused on providing resources to communities regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. However, more help is needed through grass root efforts. With your support and contributions, ICARE can continue its mission with educating communities and offering support services that can have a positive impact on the lives of many families. Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, therefore many efforts are spent on providing caregiver support, community outreach, and advancing research endeavors. Scientist and doctors are working with great effort to search for solutions to help eradicate this disease. However, they can’t do this work alone. And for this reason and many more is why ICARE needs your support!
